Arriving by train

Jaisalmer railway station sits on the eastern side of the city, a short drive from the fort area and most hotels. Trains from Delhi, Jaipur and Jodhpur often arrive early in the morning or late at night, so a pre-booked pickup saves you negotiating on the platform at an awkward hour. Share your train number and coach, and your driver will meet you at the exit. If the train is delayed, the driver tracks the new arrival time.

Arriving by air

Jaisalmer airport lies outside the city and has a limited flight schedule that can vary by season. If flights do not suit your dates, flying into Jodhpur and driving to Jaisalmer is a common alternative. The road distance is roughly 285 km and usually takes five to six hours with a break. We can arrange the transfer from Jodhpur airport or your Jodhpur hotel directly to Jaisalmer.

A day of local sightseeing by car

Inside the fort, the lanes are narrow and best explored on foot. Your driver drops you near the fort gate and waits while you walk up. After the fort, the car takes you to the havelis, Gadisar Lake and, later in the day, to Bada Bagh or Vyas Chhatri for sunset. Having one car for the whole day means you can leave shopping and extra layers in the vehicle and move between sights without waiting for autos in the heat.

Driving out to the dunes

The Sam Sand Dunes are roughly 40 km west of Jaisalmer, and the drive takes around an hour depending on stops. Many travellers stop at Kuldhara on the way. For a sunset visit, plan to leave the city in the early afternoon in winter and a little later in summer. Your driver can wait and bring you back after sunset, or drop you at your desert camp.

Outstation distances from Jaisalmer

Road distances below are approximate. Driving times depend on stops, traffic and road conditions, and we build breaks into longer journeys.

  • Jodhpur: about 285 km
  • Bikaner: about 330 km
  • Barmer: about 155 km
  • Udaipur: about 490 km
  • Jaipur: about 560 km
  • Tanot: about 120 km

Choosing the right vehicle

A sedan is comfortable for up to four people with moderate luggage and works well for transfers and city days. An SUV or MUV suits families and groups of six or seven, or anyone with large suitcases, and handles long highway days better. Tempo travellers and coaches keep bigger groups together. Tell us the number of travellers and bags and we will suggest a size; the exact vehicle is confirmed in your quote.

What affects a taxi quote

The main factors are distance and duration, the vehicle category, and whether the trip includes overnight stays for the driver. Tolls, parking, state permits and driver allowances may apply on some routes. Peak season can also affect availability. Your quote itemises these so you know what you are paying for.

Comfort and safety on long drives

Desert highways are long and straight, and the heat can be tiring. We recommend early starts, regular stops for water and food, and avoiding long night drives where possible. Keep a bottle of water, sunglasses and a light scarf in the car. If you need extra stops for children or older travellers, just tell your driver.

Early and late arrivals

Several trains reach Jaisalmer before dawn or late at night, and flight times can shift. We arrange pickups at any hour when booked in advance. Your driver will have your name and train or flight number, and you will have their phone number before you travel.

If your hotel check-in is later in the day, tell us. Some travellers prefer to go straight to a viewpoint for sunrise or have breakfast in the old city before check-in; your driver can help with that.

Hourly and full-day hire

For city use, cars are usually booked by the half day or full day rather than by the kilometre. This suits sightseeing, where the car waits while you explore. For transfers and outstation trips, pricing is usually based on the route and distance.

If you are not sure which suits your plan, describe your day and we will suggest the simplest option.

Luggage and space

Tell us how many large suitcases and small bags you have. A sedan that is comfortable for four people with day bags may be tight for four people with full-size suitcases. For long drives, an SUV or MUV gives more room to stretch out, which makes a difference over several hours.

If you are travelling with a wheelchair, pram or bulky equipment such as camera gear, mention it when you enquire.

Travelling with children

Families often want more frequent stops, shade and easy food on long drives. Mention children's ages when booking so we can plan breaks. If you need a child seat, ask in advance; availability is not guaranteed, so some families bring their own.

Group transport for events

Weddings, family gatherings and tour groups often need several vehicles or a larger coach, sometimes for multiple days. For these, send us the group size, dates, pickup points and a rough schedule by email or WhatsApp. We will propose a combination of vehicles and a timetable, subject to availability.

Booking early matters most for groups, especially in the peak winter season.

Using a taxi with a camp or safari booking

If you are booking a desert camp or safari with us, transport can be included in the same plan. That way, pickup from your hotel, the drive to the dunes and the return the next morning are coordinated in one place, and you have a single contact if anything changes.

Tipping and extras

Tipping drivers is common in India but always at your discretion. Personal stops for shopping or meals are fine within the agreed hours; if you want to extend the day significantly or add a new destination, ask your driver to check with us so we can confirm any change before it happens.

Waiting time and changes to the day

For half-day and full-day hire, your driver waits while you visit each sight. If you want to spend longer somewhere or finish later than planned, tell your driver early so they can check with us. For transfers, a reasonable waiting time is allowed for delayed trains and flights; share updates as soon as you have them.

If you need to cancel or reschedule, contact us as early as possible. The terms that apply are stated in your quote.

Night travel and desert highways

Highways around Jaisalmer are generally straight and open, but they pass through sparsely populated areas where animals may cross the road. For comfort and safety, we recommend planning long outstation journeys in daylight where possible. If a late departure is unavoidable, discuss it with us so we can plan appropriate breaks.
